ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Georgia Department of Public Health officials say a vairant of COVID-19 first discovered in the United Kingdom has been discovered in the Peach State.
DPH officials say they made the discovery of the variant in an 18-year-old male who had no history of traveling. The teen is currently isolating at home while health officials work to identify close s.
DPH stopped short of saying where exactly the case was found.
That variant has made news across the world as health officials say it is a more contagious form of the virus.
“The emergence of this variant in our state should be a wake-up call for all Georgians,” said DPH Commissioner Katheen E. Toomey, M.D., M.P.H. “Even as we begin rollout of a COVID19 vaccine, we must not let down our guard and ignore basic prevention measures – wear a mask, social distance and wash your hands frequently.”
