1 dead, others injured in shooting that locked down S.C. State campus

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS/WRDW/WAGT) - South Carolina State University issued a statement Monday in response to a shooting near their campus.
The shooting late Sunday left one person dead and three others injured.
On Monday, the coroner’s office identified Safiya Daniels, 27, of Irmo as a deceased victim of the shooting.
A university representative said the university is implementing additional safety measures.
South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers said, “While this incident poses no ongoing threat to the campus community, I have directed our campus Police Department to have additional personnel on the campus today.”
Conyers is asking students to be vigilant with their safety and to, “make good decisions about associations and social events.”
The university said the shooting happened on Buckley Street at housing not d with the university. One SC State student was shot and another was injured in a fall.
Classes were allowed to continue Monday after a meeting with law enforcement and staff. Counselors are available on campus for students.
Conyers said he will be meeting the president of the neighboring Claflin University and the Orangeburg city to discuss additional safety measures.
SC State said over the summer it added a $1 million security initiative to upgrade lighting and security technology on campus buildings and residence halls. This included an installation of 700 cameras and 27 emergency call boxes. Currently about 300 cameras have been installed in the project. Six campus safety officers had also been approved. to assist the police department.
