How Burke County murder suspect was caught in N. Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - An attempt to serve a murder warrant in North Augusta led to a standoff involving a suspect, the SWAT team, and officers in the Walnut Grove neighborhood.

Burke County officials tell us they were serving a warrant for Jordan James Perkins, 20. Perkins was one suspect wanted in a shooting that killed one and injured several at an illegal bar in Burke County.

Less than a week ago, the sheriff’s office announced a $10,000 reward for information that led deputies to the arrest of Perkins and Jawuandre Dimera Kelly, 22.

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety, U.S. Marshals Service and Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 100 block of Mill Stone Lane on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 10:45 p.m., it’s believed officers started using gas to try to get the suspect out of the attic of the home.

According to officials, the suspect was taken into custody by 11:15 p.m.

Officials say Kelly is still wanted.

North Augusta authorities wanted everyone to avoid the entrance of the neighborhood. They evacuated those near the incident.

Neighbors reported officers arrived on the scene before 5 p.m. and there was still an active scene by 11 p.m.

Our News 12 crew on scene reported officers, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and K9s were sent into the home.

Burke County officials tell us no one was injured during the standoff.

The incident is being handled by North Augusta authorities, according to officials.

“Sheriff Williams extends his sincere appreciation to our colleagues with the U.S. Marshal’s Office, SLED, and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety for their great work this evening,” the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
