White House hosts Augusta’s incoming mayor, others
WASHINGTON (WRDW/WAGT) - On Friday, the White House hosted a series of briefings with several newly elected mayors from cities across the country, including Augusta.
During the half-day forum, the mayors and mayors-elect met with several senior Biden-Harris istration officials who outlined the president’s priorities. The mayors also learned about the Biden economic agenda, including the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and Inflation Reduction Act.
The istration officials also discussed how they can continue to partner with and cities.
Mayor-elect Garnett Johnson was among those attending the forum.
We asked him a question many of you have asked us: What will he do to take Augusta from a city with potential to a city people are proud to show off?
“We need to clean our city up. Our runways are filled with litter all over the place. We have to reinstill this ion and confidence to call ourselves Augusta,” he said.

Johnson’s first day in office will be Jan. 1, when he takes the reins from Hardie Davis Jr., who couldn’t run for reelection due to term limits.
Meanwhile, Davis was hosting a farewell Christmas soiree from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Augusta-Richmond County Municipal Building to celebrate the season with the community and employees of the city.
