Dumped puppies draw plenty of people wanting to adopt
WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A few days ago, 10 puppies were found along Bellevue Plantation Road, where they’d been dumped.
They all went up for adoption at 1 p.m. Thursday at Burke County Animal Services, and eight were taken in the first 20 minutes.
After reading about the puppies, Walter Hendrix knew he had to have one to call his own.
While these puppies captured the hearts of many, they filled spaces that had been left empty for Hendrix.
“I had a dog that, I can’t, it just took three years, and I wanted a dog,” said Hendrix.
The puppies have all been full of energy during their time at the animal shelter.
“You’ve got your ones who want to sit back and be cool, calm, and collected. And you’ve got ones who want to lay in your lap and sleep, and you’ve also got your couple that are bouncing all over you, all up in you and everything else, and just want to have fun,” said Chaddrick Parrish, director of animal services.
After seeing them play, it’s hard to imagine anyone dumping them on the side of the road.
The puppies aren’t the only litter of abandoned puppies that Burke County Animal Services has. They also have a litter of seven more puppies found dumped behind a dumpster.
Chaddrick Parrish, director of Burke County Animal Services, said: “If you have animals that already had puppies and you need to rehome the puppies because you can’t financially take care of them, take them to your local animal shelter. We take in animals here every single day from residents of the county.”
Authorities still don’t know who dumped the pups. It was someone in a silver sedan, but no one saw the tag number.
For those who are caught dumping puppies, there are legal consequences.
“During the times that we gather enough information on who’s possibly dumping off puppies we have been charging them with animal cruelty,” said Parrish.
For the puppies that were adopted and Hendrix, this story has a happy ending.
The second litter of seven puppies will be available for adoption on Monday.
