JOHNSTON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office confirms one person is dead after a three-vehicle accident near Johnston.

The coroner said 24-year-old Jamarquious Tompkins, of Trenton, died after being involved in an accident just before 6 p.m. Sunday near South Carolina 191 and Old Plank Road.

Tompkins was traveling north on Airport Road in a 2007 Chevrolet sedan and had reached a stop sign when the crash occurred, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a 2014 Chevrolet pickup had been traveling south on Old Plank and stopped at Highway 191. Then as it proceeded into the intersection, a 2013 Nissan pickup swerved to avoid it while traveling south on 191.

The Nissan hit Tompkins’ car, according to the patrol.

The driver of the Nissan suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening and was taken to a hospital. Tompkins was taken to a hospital, as well, but died at 7:18 p.m. of his injuries.
