Bear dies after car hits it on highway in Aiken County

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A bear has died after being hit by a car on Edgefield Highway early Thursday, according to authorities.
Aiken County dispatchers say it happened at 12:55 a.m. on 2022 Edgefield Highway. South Carolina Department of Natural Resources crews responded to the scene.
The highway was reopened at 2:24 a.m., dispatchers said.
The bear died due to its injuries, and the driver suffered minor injuries, according to authorities.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Aiken County doesn’t have a permanently sustainable bear population, though they travel through the area and live there temporarily. The sustainable populations are closer to northwest and northeast corners of the state.
Typically, black bears require large expanses of forest or wetlands such as swamps and bays.
