Semi-truck burns after chemicals spill on I-20 in Thomson
THOMSON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A semi-truck caught on fire after chemicals inside spilled closing all lanes of I-20 off of Exit 175 in Thomson early Thursday morning, according to authorities.
The fire and cleanup shut down both sides of the interstate for several hours, although traffic was moving again by 11:40 a.m.
The McDuffie County Fire Department and cleanup crews were dealing with what they called a very limited material spill that caused the fire.
Even after the fire was contained as of 8:20 a.m., the cleanup kept the highway blocked.
A traffic accident between two tractor-trailers was also blamed on the fire.
At mile marker 178, a westbound truck stopped for traffic due to the fire, and was struck by a closely following truck that couldn’t stop. This caused the second truck to jackknife, blocking lanes of traffic.
The driver of the stopped truck was taken to Doctors Hospital with injuries.
