Scarecrow village brings autumn spirit alive in downtown Barnwell
BARNWELL, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - There’s a whole village in the middle of town.
“It’s just been a lot of fun,” said Lynn McEwen of the Barnwell County Rotary Club. “This was an idea from a former Rotarian, and we’ve run with it, and really love it.”
McEwen says the Barnwell County Rotary Club introduced the idea four years ago. Every fall since then, people in Barnwell have let their imaginations run wild.
“It’s a good cause, but it’s also just a lot of fun. People love to make scarecrows and to try different things,” she said.
She says this year there are close to 30 scarecrows, with about eight of them made by students.
“The kids love doing this, so a lot of the kids, primary and elementary school children have been working on these as well,” she said.
We checked out a few of them.
One display features a few scarecrows in a red car made out of hay, with engers looking scared.
The “Magic School Bus” made a stop in Barnwell with a display from Barnwell Primary School. On this field trip, Ms. Frizzle’s class turned into scarecrows.
There is also a cutout where you can try becoming a scarecrow if your head fits.
“As you can see, we have a lot of creativity in the community, and they love getting out here and doing this,” McEwen said.
It’s a big scarecrow contest in a small town.
You can vote for the people’s choice in the scarecrow contest until Thursday at noon.
Just visit the Rotary Club’s Facebook page -- where they have pictures of each display.
