Dozens of local rail crossings closed for maintenance

Closed railroad crossings are causing traffic problems across the Augusta area on Tuesday – and this may not be the end of it.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - In January and February, dozens of rail crossings will be closed for maintenance and repairs between Augusta and Modoc, S.C.

The work has already started in some locations and will last through about Feb. 1.

Crews will start in Augusta and work their way east, with a different closure schedule for each crossing.

No traffic will be allowed across each crossing while it’s closed, and only a handful of crossings will be closed at a time. Once work is completed on each, it will be reopened.

Work has already started that could affect crossings on Lumpkin Road, Molly Pond Road, Nixon Road, Norton Road, Old Louisville Road, Tobacco Road, Windsor Spring Road and Taylor Street.

Going forward after these closures, here’s an interactive map of the next crossings to be closed, and the schedule:

Starting Jan. 15, these Augusta Transit bus routes may be affected by the closures:

  • Sixth Street: No. 3 Gold Line/East Augusta
  • Seventh Street: No. 4 Turpin Hill/Purple Line
  • Fenwick Street: No. 3 Gold Line/East Augusta, #4 Turpin Hill/Purple Line and #6 Brown Line/Gordon Highway
  • James Brown Boulevard: No. 6 Brown Line/Gordon Highway
