Georgia sports turf on display at CFP National Championship in Houston
The Georgia Bulldogs might not play for the title this year, but a little piece of Georgia will be underfoot.
CALHOUN, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - When people think of football, threads and tubes don’t often come to mind. But maybe they should?
“We really are talking about synthetic turf,” said Shaw Turf Vice President Chuck McClurg.
At Shaw Turf in Calhoun, the technology is about trampling.
“We have the ability to tuft in all numbers, hash marks, lines, and logos,” McClurg said.
It’s called “Game On” technology, and it’s a new way to create and build turf surfaces. By incorporating all the lines and logos in production, it’s designed to save customers time and money. Shaw Turf is the only facility in the world that can do it all at once.
“Maintenance is minimized, and you have a fully integrated system,” McClurg said.
So, it’s not surprising that the College Football Playoff approached Shaw Turf to be the official synthetic turf sponsor of the College Football Playoff.
The technology will be on display at the CFP Fan Experience at Playoff Fan Central in the Houston Convention Center all weekend long, including in some spiffy yellow and black turf.
“All the product at the Playoff Fan Central will be Shaw Sports Turf or Shaw product on the floor,” McClurg said.
That includes family-friendly clinics, pep rallies, band performances, and even McClurg’s specialty – the 40-yard dash.
“At one point in time, I was pretty quick,” the former Georgia Southern wide receiver laughed. “But not today.”
So even though Shaw Turf is exporting its product to Houston this year, in 2025, Georgians will hopefully get a first-person view of the turf, the tech, and maybe some Bulldogs.
“Yes, can’t wait,” McClurg said of traveling to Houston for the National Championship. “Looking forward to it.”
