5 candidates qualify for election to fill Fleming’s House seat

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Officials have released the list of candidates for the special election next month to select who’ll succeed Barry Fleming in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Fleming, R-Harlem, resigned after Gov. Brian Kemp appointed him as a judge in the Columbia Judicial Circuit. The judicial vacancy was created by the retirement of James Blanchard Jr.

The special election will take place Feb. 13, with a runoff, if needed, to be held March 12.

The Columbia County Board of Elections said Thursday that these candidates qualified for the election:

  • CJ Pearson – Republican
  • Gary Richardson – Republican
  • Jim Steed – Republican
  • Kay Turner – Democrat
  • John Turpish – Libertarian

Jan. 16 will be the last day to to vote.

Advance in-person absentee voting will begin Jan. 22.

These Columbia County precincts will be open on Election Day:

  • 10 – Kiokee Baptist Church
  • 16 – Woodlawn Baptist Church
  • 20 – Harlem Branch Library
  • 22 – Harlem Senior Center
  • 24 – Second Mount Moriah Baptist Church
  • 25 – the Former Euchee Creek Library
  • 30 – Liberty Park
  • 31 – Grovetown Methodist Church
  • 32 – Greater Augusta Apostolic Church
  • 33 – Grovetown DPS Station #2
  • 34 – Grovetown Branch Library
  • 40 – Eubank Blanchard Community Center
  • 62 – Parkway Baptist Church
  • 68 – Parkway Elementary School
  • 75 – Belair Baptist Church
