Car crash kills Aiken teen on the way to work-study

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle accident that claimed the life of an Aiken teenager.

The accident happened Wednesday at 9:50 a.m. on Green Pond Road at Modoc Lane.

Authorities say the driver of a 2007 Mercury SUV was traveling north on Green Pond Road when the vehicle crossed the center line, overcorrected, traveled off the right side of the road and hit a tree.

The driver was the sole occupant of the sport utility vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 18-year-old Emily Heath, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Coroner Darryl Ables.

The coroner’s office says a toxicology analysis is pending.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating.

A friend of the Heath family stated she was on her way to work at Aloha Aesthetics as part of a work-study program for phlebotomy when the accident occurred.

The friend also told us Heath had already completed her lab tech certification and was planning to attend college for a degree in nursing.

Heath was a senior at Silver Bluff High School, her principal released this statement Thursday morning.

The Biomedical Service Program at Aiken County’s Career and Technology Center also released a statement Thursday.

Heath’s family will greet friends on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Talatha Baptist Church in Aiken starting at 1 p.m., Hatcher Funeral Home stated on Facebook.
