First lady Jill Biden addresses S.C. educators at campaign event

COLUMBIA, S.C. - First lady Jill Biden came to Columbia on Friday to headline the South Carolina Educators for Biden-Harris campaign event.

This was the lifelong educator and community college professor’s first 2024 campaign trip to South Carolina. Jill Biden will also attend the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority annual Pink Ice Gala in Columbia.

After a powerful introduction from Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, Biden took the podium to speak about the primary and 2024 election.

The first lady touched on the importance of education to a functioning democracy, and said her husband’s istration is committed to ing teachers’ unions, expanding internet infrastructure for educational facilities and facilitating student loan debt relief.

During her speech, she also highlighted former President Donald Trump, the expected challenger to President Biden after he obtained back-to-back victories in the Iowa and New Hampshire Republican primaries. She said the former President’s istration would be harmful to educators, as it would advocate for gutting public school budgets, censoring lesson plans and banning books.

Biden emphasized the importance of South Carolina during her speech as well.

“You gave us wings,” she said. “Without South Carolina, there is no President Biden.”

On Saturday, President Joe Biden will be in the state for the South Carolina Democratic Party’s “First in the Nation” celebration and dinner.

It’s been a week of high-profile visits for the Biden campaign.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom also came to the Palmetto State, making an appearance in Allendale.

South Carolina has a key role in the presidential election as the Democrats’ first primary state.

On the Republican side, Nikki Haley is campaigning in her home state as the final major opponent of Donald Trump in her bid for the GOP nomination.
