ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) - A South Carolina State University student arrested Tuesday after shots were fired on campus has now been charged with attempted murder.

Those charges come after university officials said the 19-year-old sophomore Rolando Ifill got into a physical fight with another student, pointed a gun at the student and fired at them “with intent to kill,” arrest warrants said.

According to a South Carolina State University incident report, the student said the fight started over a wallet.

The student fled as shots were fired at them, university officials said. According to a news release from the university, gunshots shattered the glass above an exit door to the corridor between Hodge and Davis Halls.

According to an incident report, several shots were fired on campus before Ifill was detained.

The student who had shots fired at them ran into Claflin University’s dining hall to take shelter. They had minor injuries from the broken glass, Claflin University officials said. The student refused to be transported to a local hospital despite having glass in their feet, the incident report said. They were treated by EMS on the scene.

Ifill was captured near Mount Zion Church at 1785 Amelia Street in Orangeburg.

A 9mm handgun was found in his left jacket pocket along with a backpack, according to an incident report.

Ifill was charged with carrying a firearm on school property by Orangeburg Department of Public Safety. He was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime by campus police.

Ifill was granted a $50,000 surety bond on Wednesday with the condition he does not tres SC State’s campus unless accompanied by law enforcement.
