AIKEN, S.C. - (WRDW/WAGT) - Fifteen high school students recently completed job shadow experiences with leadership, engineers and education outreach staff at the Savannah River Site.
It gave them an inside look at engineering, facilities and career opportunities as they toured the Waste Solidification Building, which was designed and built as a nuclear facility and repurposed for tours and training.

The students learned about workplace, public and environmental safety, the SRS apprenticeship school and nternship program, and other opportunities.
The students came from Midland Valley High School, South Aiken High School, Aiken High School, Silver Bluff High School and Aiken Scholars Academy. They were selected in part because of their interest in a four-year degree program involving science, technology, engineering and math.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions Director of Engineering Technical Services Eric Johnson served as a mentor and educator for the day.
His son Tyler – with an interest in mechanical engineering – was one of the participants from South Aiken High.
“My dad has always pushed me to pursue engineering because of the opportunity and variety of work on a day-to-day basis,” Tyler said. “After seeing the site for myself today, I can imagine myself following in his footsteps and ing this workforce.”
