A look at the future of sports for those with disabilities
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new handicap-accessible baseball field opened up in North Augusta on Thursday.
The Miracle League Field at Riverview Park was created specifically to let players, no matter their disability, enjoy the sport without any barriers.
It’s breaking ground on a level playing field for those in the CSRA.
“Pinch me. This really is finally happening. I mean, it’s finally coming here and we’re all ready to play ball,” said the founder of the RECing Crew Pamela Stickler.
The RECing Crew fights for equal opportunities no matter who you are. Soon, everyone will have a field of their own.
“This is the best definition of inclusion everybody talks about it. This is it,” she said.
The area will have two baseball fields with handicap-accessible dugouts. Other sports can take place on the soft surface as well.
It’s all to give those who might’ve not had a place to play, their own field of dreams.
“It’s gonna be great to actually have a field that we can go out and play on. And I also will know that everybody will be safe on it. And we just want to play ball,” said Stickler.
Phase two of the project is still looking for donations. It will include a handicap pavilion and she continues to ask the community to it.
“Investing these individuals that are going to be playing on it. Actually, live here and make them feel included in that in the community too,” she said.
