Report reveals new details on fire that killed 2 children

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - We are learning more about the fatal fire that killed two children asleep in their Augusta last Thursday.

The Augusta Fire Department report says there were no smoke detectors in the home and there was no automatic extinguishing system.

The fire ignited in the living room, but the cause is still unknown according to authorities. The fire was confined to the home.

Fire officials say everyone in the home was asleep, and there was no human contribution to the fire.

According to the coroner, Ty’Asia Clifford, 10, and Aubrey Williams, 7, were sleeping when the died at their home on the 1900 block of Moore Road during the incident.

Both were pronounced dead on the scene at 2:10 a.m., according to the coroner, and the autopsies have been scheduled.

Augusta fire officials say the call for the fire came in at 1:04 a.m., they arrived on scene five minutes later. Four fire engines were sent.

Crews had the fire controlled by 2 a.m. and left the scene at 5:31 a.m., according to the fire report.

Upon arrival, officials say firefighters saw flames through the front door and windows but quickly extinguished the fire.

Augusta Fire/EMA Chief Antonio Burden stated: “We are heartbroken over the loss of two young lives and extend our deepest sympathies to their family and all affected. In this time of grief, we stand united in offering and emphasizing the importance of fire safety to prevent future tragedies.”

We spoke with some neighbors who say the young girls could also be seen playing in their front yard.

During their primary search, firefighters found Clifford and Williams in a bedroom.

The mother and her 13-year-old daughter, having escaped safely, were transported to Doctors Hospital with injuries.

The funeral for the girls will be at Greater Young Zion Baptist Church off Sandbar Ferry Road on Monday.

Less than two hours later, Augusta firefighters were called to an abandoned structure on Lucky Street due to a fire at 2:23 a.m., according to authorities.

Upon arrival, crews observed smoke and flames but quickly managed to extinguish the fire.

A primary search was conducted to ensure the building was empty, confirming there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
