One-Tank Trip: Immerse yourself in racing at NASCAR Hall of Fame
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new NASCAR season begins with the Daytona 500 this weekend.
Most race teams are based in Charlotte, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame is there too. We went there for this week’s One-Tank Trip.
“We tell the story of the history of NASCAR, where it came from, but we also tell the story of what the sport is now,” said Kevin Schlesier, Senior Director of Museum and Industry Affairs.
He’s helped get thousands of artifacts and dozens of cars into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
MORE ONE-TANK TRIPS:
- See 6 waterfalls at Tallulah Gorge State Park
- Visit the first Waffle House, right here in Georgia
- Visit Girl Scout founder’s birthplace in Savannah
- See military history up close at S.C. museum
- Ga. gas station has unique backyard
- Watch planes take off at this runway park
- Visit the Angel Oak Tree, more than 400 years old
“We bring them in temporarily, so we borrow them, and then we give them back. While that seems like a challenge, we think that’s really cool because it gets us to change the exhibits out regularly so there’s always something new to see,” he said.
In the Hall of Honor, they have real cars used by this year’s inductees.
“That’s the heart and soul of the building is to honor those inductees, those that have reached the pinnacle of the sport, but we also wanted to give our guests a hands-on experience about what NASCAR is,” said Schlesier.
They show you what it’s like competing in a race with a pit crew and racing simulator.
Our Will Volk won his race on the simulator. He says the key is to just avoid all the slow cars and crashes.
You can also try announcing and directing a broadcast.
The Hall of Fame also has a theater. They plan on having a watch party for the Daytona 500 on Sunday.
Ticket prices for the Hall of Fame depend on your age or if you served in the military. The general price for adults is $27.
