SYLVANIA, Ga. (WTOC) - People in one Screven County neighborhood say they fear when rain is in the forecast because every time it rains, they get trapped in or out of their homes.

They say their dirt road becomes a mud pit that cars can’t make it through. Residents say they have been asking for help, but the help they get just isn’t fixing the problem.

“If I had a four-wheeler, trust I would have been out here doing something,” said Tiffany Shepard, Sylvania resident.

The dirt road turned mud pit comes after a few days of rain here in Sylvania, something that the residents of Kimwood Drive have grown to expect following heavy rains.

But this time around, it caused trucks to get stuck, and people to get stranded. It hit a breaking point for people like Bernithia Washington.

“I’m 78 years old, if anything were to happen to me or him up here, how are we gonna get from up there,” said Berenitha Washington, a longtime Sylvania resident.

At 78 years old, Washington is fearful that this lack of a roadway could pose a safety concern for her and her neighbors.

“If an EMS or firetruck had to come up here, how they gonna get there,” said Washington.

Since this is a privately owned road, the county has no jurisdiction, but trucks full of dirt came though to help patch up the trouble spots.

Residents say that this is way better than what they have had to be dealing with, but they know it’s a temporary fix to what they say needs a permanent solution.

“This is better, but it’s gonna start raining in a few days and it’s just gonna be washed off,” said Makayla Squire, Sylvania visitor.

“Pave it, put gravel, do something,” Shepard said. “Something has to be done.”
