AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - With warmer afternoons in the forecast, spring is in the air across the CSRA. While spring brings sunshine and flowers there is a tiny nuisance in the air that you might be feeling the side effects of now. Pollen is on the rise across the southeast, especially tree pollen.

Pollen comes from plants of all types, but the main groups that cause irritation are trees, weeds, and grass.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, tree pollen peaks in March but the season starts as early as February and lasts through June. Grass pollen hits its peak in April and lasts through June. By the end of summer weed pollen picks up and lasts through November.

Weather conditions have a big impact on how pollen affects your allergies each season.

During dry spells, it is common for trees to produce more pollen and since the pollen is not saturated by water it makes it easier to carry through the wind. When we do have heavy rain events - that can help stimulate and advance growth in plants, thus producing more pollen.

Rain will however bring temporary relief by washing any loose pollen out, but there is a chance for the rain to break up clumps of pollen into smaller particles making them easier to travel through the air.
