Man convicted in standoff where he used his kids as shields
WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Burke County jury this week convicted a violent felon who used his 1- and 2-year-old daughters as human shields in an armed standoff with Burke County sheriff’s deputies.
The jury found Kevin McCardell guilty of all counts from the November 2022 incident where he fired upon deputies while holding his girls hostage.
Judge John Flythe sentenced him to 270 years in confinement.
McCardell was on the run from an attempted murder charge in Maryland, where he choked and beat his wife, according to authorities.
They settled in a small Burke County unit in the 100 block of Southside Drive, where the abuse continued.
Finally on Nov. 16, 2022, he beat her in the face with a dirty diaper, according to authorities.
She managed to escape, then hid in the woods for several hours until a family member could pick her up.
