Four years since Ahmaud Arbery was murdered while jogging through Glynn Co. neighborhood
GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Friday marks four years since Ahmaud Arbery’s death.
He was shot and killed while taking a jog through the Satilla Shores community in Glynn County.
Right now, three men sit behind bars for life after being convicted for his murder. Father and son, Gergory and Travis McMichael, along with William Bryan were all sentenced to life in prison.
The McMichaels chased Arbery down in their pick-up truck while Bryan followed, recording the murder on his phone. It’s a case that was not only felt by the Glynn County community, but worldwide.
“All the evidence that’s been put out, the world seen what happened, and the world seen why Ahmaud died,” Ahmad’s father, Marcus Arbery, Sr. said.
On the day of the verdicts back in 2021, prosecutor Linda Dunikowski says justice was served.
“Because the jury system works in this country, and when you present the truth to people and they can see it, they will do the right thing. And that’s what this jury did today in getting justice for Ahmaud Arbery,” Dunikowski said.
The three men are now appealing their federal hate crimes convictions. Oral arguments are set to be heard at the end of March in the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
Former Brunswick District Attorney Jackie Johnson is also facing misconduct charges after allegations that she tried to protect the McMichaels. No trial date has been set yet.
We’ll keep you updated as both of those cases develop.
