Gov. Kemp remarks on immigration issues, border security after death at UGA
ATHENS, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The tragic killing of a nursing student on the University of Georgia campus is now morphing into a discussion about immigration.
Laken Riley, 22, was found dead on the University of Georgia campus Thursday afternoon. She was a student at the Augusta University College of Nursing in Athens.
Police quickly suspected foul play in Riley’s death and around 5 p.m. on Friday, the University of Georgia confirmed they had a suspect in custody. Law enforcement identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, a native of Venezuela who illegally entered the United States near El Paso, Texas, in 2022, an official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Sunday.
Gov. Brian Kemp was in Athens Monday morning addressing the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce at its “Pancakes and Policy” event not far from where the murder took place. He started the event by saying, “This murder was inexcusable and avoidable.” He also called out President Joe Biden for not having a more secure border and demanded action.
The Pancakes and Policy event is a time for the community of Athens to discuss recent events in the state and for the governor to provide updates on the economy and public safety.
