Downtown Augusta construction affects more than traffic flow
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is just around the corner, and construction downtown will affect the route.
But that’s not all, because the work won’t be going away until 2027.
There are six projects spanning from Fifth Street to Telfair Street. All paid for with sales tax money the city’s been collecting for the past decade.
City officials say the projects will help improve curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and more that have worn down over time.
Thirteenth, Fifth, Sixth and Greene Streets are set to be completed in 2025, Telfair in 2026, and Broad Street in 2027.
One of the biggest looing impacts will be the St. Patrick’s parade on March 16 at 2 p.m
This year’s route is moving to Greene Street instead of Broad Street.
“This year is pretty unique,” said Tyler Snead with the Irish American Heritage Society. “Due to construction downtown, we’re having to move the parade a little bit.”
Snead said construction isn’t stopping the sea of green.
“If you’re participating in the parade, you’ll line up at the JBA and enter through Sixth Street. From there, we will leave Seventh and go up Telfair like we always do and then turn on 11th and Greene Street.”
He said the best place to see the green candy shower is right on Greene Street.
“If you want to set up behind the library by the Public Defender’s Office, anywhere along Greene Street will be a great place to watch,” said Snead.
