Here are new details on truck fire that brought I-20 to standstill
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - We’re learning more about a car carrier fire that snarled traffic this week on Interstate 20 near the state line.
The fire broke out around 10:53 p.m. Monday on eastbound I-20, and no injuries were reported.
According to a report from the Augusta Fire Department, the driver said he discovered the fire after hearing one of the car tires explode. When he looked in the mirror, he saw flames.
He stopped the truck and tried to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher.
When that didn’t work, he separated the front part of the truck from the trailer.
Five vehicles were attached to the trailer and four were attached to the tractor section of the truck.
Witnesses said at least four vehicles caught fire.
It took several Augusta Fire Department units to put out the blaze. While this was happening, traffic on the interstate came to a standstill.
The fire was extinguished a few minutes before midnight.
