Murder suspect returned to Augusta after arrest in Beech Island
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 32-year-old suspect has now been booked in Charles B. Webster Detention Center after he was wanted in connection to a homicide that happened on Washington Road, according to authorities.
On Monday, Robert Ward booked in Augusta after being arrested Thursday in Beech Island, S.C., by the U.S. Marshals Service Southeastern Task Force with the assistance of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal incident happened on the 2800 block of Washington Road on Feb. 28, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Ward has been charged with murder, two counts of possession of a weapon during a crime, according to jail records.
John Lowden Jr., 38, of the 1700 block of Deer Chase Land, was shot at least one time and pronounced dead on the scene at 3:05 a.m., according to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.
His death comes during an outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed about 150 lives across the CSRA since April 2022. Communities large and small on both sides of the river have been affected, but as the largest city, Augusta has been hot especially hard.
