LEXINGTON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - An Augusta man has died after a multi-car crash on Interstate 20 eastbound near Lexington on Wednesday morning.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 30-year-old Andre Tyrone Eason.

According to the coroner’s office, the crash occurred at 9:45 a.m.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened after an enclosed trailer became detached from a 2020 Dodge Ram.

Officials say the truck stopped on the interstate because there was no place for it to pull over. Two people in the truck then got out of their vehicle and attempted to re-attach the trailer.

Officials say the drivers of a 1998 Dodge Ram and 2017 Jeep Cherokee attempted to move over and avoid hitting the disabled trailer. The driver of the 1998 Dodge Ram struck the Jeep Cherokee from behind, causing it to strike the trailer from behind.

The trailer then struck the pedestrians who were trying to re-attach the trailer to the 2020 Dodge Ram.

The drivers of the Jeep Cherokee and 1998 Dodge Ram were taken to an area hospital, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Eason, who was a pedestrian in the crash, died on scene, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Officials say the other pedestrian was also taken to an area hospital.

The eastbound lanes of I-20 near Exit 61 were shutdown for several hours while officials investigated and cleared the crash. Lanes are now back open.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.
