AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - When it comes to play on the course at Augusta National Golf Club, a recent Masters champion is the heavy favorite to win the green jacket once again this year: Scottie Scheffler.

With all the stars making up the extremely talented field at the Masters, a lot of people believe 2022 champion Scheffler is the man to beat this time around.

Scottie is on a streak right now, with seven top 10 finishes this year – and six six in a row dating back to February.

In his last three starts, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and won the Players Championship while receiving treatment for his neck in between holes and finished as the runner-up in the Texas Children’s House Open.

As he continues to be strong off the tee and has his putter working, he’ll have the chance to an elite company, becoming the 18th player to ever win the Masters multiple times.

“To me it’s just a special place, it’s kind of the Mecca for us growing up here in the States and being Americans,” he said Tuesday. “I think this is the tournament that we all look for. To be here on property every year is extremely special.”

2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, a favorite to win this year’s tournament, sat down for an interview Tuesday at Augusta National Golf Club.

His 2022 victory is still strong in his memory.

“I just think it was a good experience,” he said. “It was obviously a ton of fun.”

He hopes to keep coming back.

“I like competing here and hopefully will be out here competing for a long long time,” he said.

The course does have unique challenges.

“It swirls like crazy around this place and you have to stay patient,” he said.

“This is a place where it’s extremely important to have that trust in yourself.”

If there’s something he’s learned since winning the Masters, it’s the importance of rest.

He said he’s not big on heavy practice during a tournament week.

“If I’m out there tomorrow afternoon still searching for my swing, I’m probably not going to find it,” he said, “and if I do, it was probably there all along.”
