AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Whether you are a visitor or local, there are different ways to experience all things Augusta.

From becoming a scientist for a day to curating your own charcuterie board or even walking the halls of history in our mills, Authentic Augusta offers 10 immersive experiences that bring you into the action.

“It’s not the same as just walking through the discovery center or walking through a museum or an art gallery,” said Jennifer Bowen, Vice President of Destination Development and Community Engagement for Destination Augusta. “It gives you a chance to be a part of the action.”

Some of the experiences may change the way you look at Augusta.

“We plant a seed this week, if you will, with messages on billboards, through airport messages, and through a few other things for us to tell people to come back and see us and enjoy these experiences while you’re here,” said Bowen.

One of Authentic Augusta’s 10 experiences allows you to connect with Augusta’s Black caddies. It’s called “Men on the Bag” and it is shown at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum for Black History.

“We know many of the names of the legends,” said Corey Rogers, a historian at the museum. “We see pictures of Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus or Gary Player. And oftentimes, within the frame of that picture, it might say, unknown caddy.”

Rogers says with this experience we can put names to faces.

“By introducing ‘Men on the Bag’, we’re introducing a small slice of Augusta history, unknown to a lot of Augustans, but at the same time, unknown to those outside of the area,” said Rogers.

They say the whole idea is to experience Augusta in an authentic way.
