Traffic into downtown Bamberg reopens months after EF-2 tornado
BAMBERG, S.C. (WIS) - Traffic into downtown Bamberg has reopened three months after an EF-2 tornado hit the town, destroying buildings.
Several parts of South Carolina reported damage from severe storms on January 9, but Bamberg experienced the brunt of it.
Many businesses were destroyed with some buildings missing sections of wall, roofs or signage.
The National Weather Service said the EF2 tornado was roughly 300-400 yards in diameter, and had maximum wind speeds that reached roughly 125 mph.
Main Street suffered significant damage and first responders closed down U.S. 301.
“SCDOT maintenance forces made minor repairs and ensured the road was safe for vehicle traffic,” the department said in a news release. “SCDOT encourages drivers to use caution in the area as motorists adjust to using the reopened road.”
