MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - A man died after falling multiple stories to escape an early Sunday morning shooting at a Myrtle Beach hotel.

Myrtle Beach police were called just after 1 a.m. to the sixth floor of Hotel Blue at 705 South Ocean Boulevard for a disturbance.

An investigation revealed that the disturbance led to several shots being fired inside a room.

Daniel Richardson, who is visiting Myrtle Beach with his family, said he heard the shots while listening to music on his hotel balcony.

“It cut through the music. It was a different bang than a bass,” Richardson explained.

Investigators said a man left the room where the shots were fired and tried to climb down the back of the building.

Police said he ended up falling to the ground before reaching the fifth floor.

Jorge Orellana, from Hendersonville, N.C., was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office added that Orellana, 27, fell as he was “fleeing” from the gunshots.

Richardson said he couldn’t believe the number of police cars who responded to the scene.

“We definitely didn’t expect to see the entire street lined up in blue lights flashing,” Richardson said.

Richardson said for a second his family thought about leaving their trip early to keep their kids safe. But the police response is what convinced him and his family to stay for the rest of their vacation.

“It seemed like it was handled really quickly,” Richardson said.

This is an active investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to call 843-918-1382 and reference case number 24-006574.
