Augusta Locally Grown holds class for homeschooled families

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta Locally Grown is on a mission to help farmers and families learn healthy habits.

“For our children, getting them in the kitchen is important but also getting them out in the garden, in the rose beds and learning what they’re growing and how their food is prepared and comes from,” said Development Director Diane Kerekanitch.

It’s why they added a weekly cooking class for families that homeschools, like Terra Rose and her kids.

“It’s our first year homeschooling and having this consistent Tuesday class has made such a big difference for them to have friends to see every single week. So, it’s made a big difference,” said Rose.

Organizers say it came out of a want from the community.

“We had a group of homeschool parents that asked us to do a homeschool class and that turned into doing a class for them once a month and that turned into an interest of doing a homeschool class every week,” said Kerekanitch.

From carrot cake to homemade pasta and sweet potato fritters, the class helps students learn how to cook food with ingredients they can grow at home.

Rose said: “You can get sucked into the convenience food. You know how easy it is to just stop on the way home and grab McDonald’s or something terrible when you could come to cooking class, learn how to make it yourself and go home. It costs a lot less money and it’s way healthier for you.”

The homeschool class follows local school schedules and will take a break for the summer in May.
