AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Right before the 88th Masters teed off, Evans native Kipp Madison made history at Augusta National by becoming the first player from the Augusta area to win a Drive, Chip, and Putt national championship.

Paving the way for more of our local youth golfers to shine on the brightest stage.

Winning is an experience Kipp will never forget.

“You’re at Augusta National. I mean, you’re nervous. You’re excited all at the same time. There are so many emotions,” Kipp said.

Every champion needs a pre-round meal and Kipp always goes with a classic.

“Chicken tenders and ketchup and tater tots,” he said. “It’s just good and that’s probably one of my favorite foods.”

Champions aren’t born overnight, and for Kipp, he’s out on this course every day trying to find a new way to take his game to the next level.

Lori Madison is Kipp’s mother. She said, “Kipp and I will be out there at 8 to 8:30 at night, and he’ll ask me to shine the lights on the putting green so that he can still putt, and there’s, all hours of the day. If he has a break, he’ll go out and practice.”

There are times when sports have the power to transcend the game. For the Madison family, golf has provided them with so many magical moments.

Earl Madison is Kipp’s father. He said, “To see him achieve his goal, as a parent no words can describe it. That’s why I was so elated out there on the golf course.”

Lori said: “Golf teaches so much more than golf, and for that, I am so thankful. It teaches these kids how to get out of bad situations on their own.”

Winning the Drive, Chip, and Putt is a great way to start a young career, but Kipp is just getting started.

Kipp said: “I want to play Augusta National like Akshay Bhatia, but it would be incredible just getting on a mini tour, the Korn Ferry Tour would be incredible.”

This year Bhatia became the first Drive, Chip, and Putt alum to compete in the field at Augusta National.
