24-year-old killed in Richmond County’s latest shooting
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 24-year-old man died after a shooting on Williamsburg Drive – one of two fatal shootings within 24 hours in the CSRA.
Gregory Campbell, of the 300 block of Barrow Drive, was shot at least one time in the 300 block of Williamsburg Drive, the Benson Estates apartment complex, according to Coroner Mark Bowen.
Campbell was taken to Wellstar MCG hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:34 p.m. Sunday, Bowen said. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Less than 24 hours later, the CSRA saw another fatal shooting. In Millen, a 39-year-old man was fatally shot after a dispute escalated Monday night, according to authorities.
Campbell’s shooting wasn’t the first homicide at Benson Estates.
In 2020, Joshua Hadnot of Memphis, Tenn., was killed there. Jeremiah Long was taken into custody in connection with that shooting.
Campbell’s slaying was among a string of shootings across the CSRA.
In addition to the Millen slaying:
- One person was injured in a shooting Sunday afternoon at a Circle K at Peach Orchard and Tobacco roads. It happened after an argument escalated, according to authorities.
- Early Sunday, a shooting was reported in the 700 block of Matthews Road in Washington County. Plenty of blood was found at a home where the victim went, but he couldn’t be located.
Campbell was the latest victim in an outbreak of violence that’s claimed more than 150 lives across the CSRA in the past two years. Communities large and small have been affected, but as the largest city in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.
Authorities have blamed much of the problem on gangs.
