‘Landspout’ weather phenomenon spotted in Lexington County
LEXINGTON, S.C. (WIS) - A WIS News 10 viewer caught on camera a possible landspout in Lexington County on Thursday afternoon.
This video sent to the newsroom was taken at U.S. 378 and Leaphart Street at around 5:50 p.m., the viewer said.
According to WIS meteorologist Eric Zernich, landspouts form from the ground up — unlike tornadoes, which develop from the clouds down.
“These are usually harmless, as you can see, landspouts look like a tight rope cyclone,” Zernich said.
Recent weather conditions allowed for this phenomenon.
The Midlands has seen fairly dry weather conditions as of late, so there is a layer of dust at the surface that can eventually grow into the small cyclones, according to Zernich.
The National Weather Service says landspouts are most common in Wyoming, eastern Colorado and New Mexico.
