Clyburn among 19 awarded with Presidential Medal of Freedom
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - President Joe Biden announced he is awarding South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The medal is the highest civilian honor in the United States and is given to people who have made significant contributions to the security and prosperity of the USA, world peace or other exemplary endeavors.

Xavier Pinckney, 24, was sentenced to 45 months in prison for providing false and misleading information to state authorities investigating the murder of Dime Doe. He previously pleaded guilty on Oct 26, 2023.

“Words cannot express the profound honor and gratitude I feel upon receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Clyburn said. “This recognition is not only a testament to my work, but also to the countless individuals who have ed my journey; the giants who fought alongside me for justice, equity, and the pursuit of progress; and the of my loving family.”
The Sumter native served as the Assistant Democratic Leader and Majority Whip in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The congressman is one of 19 people receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year. Other recipients include former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Vice President Al Gore, civil rights activist Clarence Jones, Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky, Academy Award winning actress Michelle Yeoh and more.
The award will be presented to recipients at the White House on Friday.
