New family-affordable community hosts grand opening in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new family-affordable community opened on Wednesday in Augusta.
It’s called the Legacy at Walton Greens and along with being wallet-friendly, they offer an after-school program for children who live in the complex free of charge.
It’s bringing 250 new units but is already 75% leased out with a waiting list of more than 2,000.
It’s just one way affordable housing is growing in the area.

On Wednesday, Walton Greens opens, but soon to is Watson Pointe off of Broad Street.
Approved Tuesday by the Augusta Commission, it’s going to bring more than 50 new units of affordable housing to the elderly.
And the need for more space can’t be overstated.
“Affordable housing is one of the most highest priorities that we have here in Augusta,” said Douglas Freeman, Deputy Director of the Augusta Housing Authority. “As of today, we have over 20,000 families that are still on the various waiting lists for the Augusta Housing Authority properties.”
And it takes time to make the space to begin with. The demolition began on the space here seven years ago.
From the rubble now stands a brand new community with resources that can even help kids pre-K through 5 after school and during the summer.
“One of the biggest struggles I find as Mayor is creating dignity in housing. I tell everyone I don’t think people realize how much we take it for granted. Having a place that we can go home, that’s comfortable for us,” said Mayor Garnett Johnson.
The next step in creating more space is just down the road.
Freeman said: “Dogwood Terrace is our next piece of the puzzle, the next property that we’re trying to develop. We recently received approval to demolish that, we’ll shortly begin relocating the families that are there now.”
The community features:
- Spacious apartments
- An Adventure Center – A complimentary after-school enrichment program.
- It has tutoring, field trips, and counseling services for the kids.

They’re looking forward to serving people with excellence.
