New Aiken program provides counseling for grieving youth
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new foster care program in Aiken County is helping youth with grief .
The Helping Hands Center’s program called Dougy Center’s LYGHT will provide counseling for kids.
It is named after Dougy Turno, who traveled from Aiken to Portland, Oregon in 1981 to receive experimental treatment for an inoperable brain tumor.
Officials say it can help kids beyond their everyday needs that go through trauma.
“There are some youth who wear their trauma like a blanket and it’s not their fault. They struggle. So we see a balance of those things. We see some kids who are here ready to take advantage of what we offer and go out and start their own life, and there are some children who we have to do crisis de-escalation often and help them manage their symptoms,” said Clinical er Rysheeka Bush.
The program meets every other Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at St. Johns Methodist Church.
