McCORMICK, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A McCormick County deputy was acknowledged on the State House floor on Thursday after an officer-involved shooting.

Sgt. Robby Coker was recognized by Sens. Billy Garrett, Brian Adams and Shane Massey.

Coker received a proclamation for an incident in which he was shot last June.

The recognition came on the last day of the legislative session, although lawmakers will be back for a special session to handle some unfinished business.

Investigators say McCormick County deputies responded to 911 calls of a suspicious person around Greenfield Road and Mears Lane. The sheriff’s agency said the calls came in at 7:40 a.m. June 18.

Once deputies arrived, the suspect opened fire at Coker, who shot back.

Coker and the suspect were both shot.

The suspect, later identified as Obed Barba, 20, died at the scene. Coker was taken to a hospital.

Coker was released from the hospital on June 24.

“Special thanks to Senator Adams for championing the award and reading at the House. us in congratulating Sgt. Coker for his bravery and perseverance while protecting the citizens of McCormick County,” said the McCormick County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post.
