Laney Museum golf tournament marks desegregation milestone

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History held its fundraising golf tournament Saturday morning.

The tournament honored the 60th anniversary of four Black golfers who desegregated the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, also known as the Patch, in 1964.

Downtown Soul City presented the Soul City Game Fest on Saturday. Tabletop games were on display for people to come out and play together or against each other.

They were John Elam, Clois Herndon, Raymond Jenkins and Dr. Harry Thompson.

Jaylen Parker, one of the golfers at the tournament, spoke about this milestone.

“It’s good to come out and have some fellowship and fun with some of the guys out here and being able to give back at the same time,” Parker said. “This is a win-win.”
