Separate fires spur Wendy’s evacuation, displace family of 9

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Crews put out fires Monday night at Wendy’s on Walton Way and one that displaced nine people at a home on Cromwell Court in south Augusta.

Officials say a firefighter spotted the Wendy’s fire.

He was at a red light and saw smoke coming from Wendy’s. He notified dispatchers as he went to assist.

Upon arrival, heavy smoke was visible, according to crews.

All employees made it out of the building safely, according to crews.

Officials say the fire happened at 8:38 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The house fire in the 3000 block of Cromwell Court led to an emergency response by American Red Cross volunteers from the East Central Georgia region.

They assisted one family for a total of nine people after the fire was reported at 8:39 p.m.

The Red Cross provided comfort kits, direct client assistance and recovery planning.
