Local pastor calls for action after weapons found in CSRA schools
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - After weapons were found at two CSRA schools on Wednesday, one local pastor is calling for change.
The Rev. Dr. Larry Fryer has been working on a “Gun Violence Strategy: Where do we go from here?” meeting with the community and local leaders.
Ideally, he wants representatives from education, government, religious, parents and students to show up to address the issue on June 6.
Now, he feels like this is the time there needs to be action.
RECENT YOUTH CRIME IN THE CSRA:
- Students caught with real gun, toy guns, knife at 3 local schools
- 17-year-old accused of stabbing at Richmond County jail
- 14-year-old arrested in deadly shooting at Olmstead Homes
- Suspect turns himself in after shooting death of 14-year-old
- Allendale County on edge after slaying of teen, 2 other shootings
- 18-year-old killed, 2 injured in shooting on Hicks Street
“We can’t wait. It is time for us to just start having things in our churches. Get out of school istration to get involved with us and do things there. Do things in our community centers, and places like that, to curtail some of these issues,” said Fryer.
More importantly, he feels like the youth needs to be heard.
“We are not listening to them. We need to listen to these students and find out what they’re saying what they say because they know what’s going on. They’re out there in it and everything and I’ve been out there for you know, over 30-some-odd years,” said Fryer.
Fryer says he feels like too much has happened in just the past couple of weeks, following teen murders and teen murder suspects in the last month alone.
“All of the killings and other acts of violence have taken its toll on us,” he said.
Fryer says action needs to be taken beyond prayer.
“Our people in the school system, our parents, and until we sit down at the table and begin to plan after prayer is okay to pray, but we got to do some things after prayer,” he said.
