What to expect when Augusta Air Show takes off this weekend
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Augusta Air Show returns this weekend, headlined by the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor Demo Team.
Guests will also see the U.S. Navy Growler Demo Team, Navy MH-53 Sea Dragon, Navy Legacy Flight, Buck Roetman, an attack helicopter demoi, the Re/Max Parachute Team, a P-51 Mustang demo, Greg Koontz and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter.
“I think there’s a level of patriotism that comes with air shows inherently. You know, seeing our military and what they offer,” said Chris Durato, Director of Public Relations for the air show.
There will be a mix of civilian and military aircraft, including Buck Roetman flying his plane.
“We’ll be tumbling the airplane, loops, rolls, turn the airplane anything you can think of,” Roetman said.
He’s just grateful to do what he does and hopes the kids at the show can learn something.
“Find your ion, take some time, and do it. I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I have the best job in the world,” Roetman said.
Dirato says the event is family-friendly and will leave an impact on everyone who comes.
“Seeing the smiles on people’s faces, especially the kids, you know, they love the loud and boisterous jets. Seeing the thrill on their faces ... yeah, it puts a smile on my face,” Dirato said.
Gates open at 9 a.m., both Saturday and Sunday, at Augusta Regional Airport, with opening ceremonies at 11:30 a.m.
Last year was the first time the event took place since the early 2000′s.
“We brought it back for the first time in 20 years. I think there’s a definite thirst for this kind of entertainment in this market,” Dirato said.
