THOMSON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The city of Thomson finished its first-ever project using federal tax credits to bring a historic building back to life.

Built in 1914, the Thomson Fire Hall is now changed but still preserved.

The city of Thomson you know now is looking different and will only change moving forward as growth moves in the area.

“We’re not going to fix it overnight, but we are committed to making a renaissance downtown in downtown Thomson,” said Community Development Director Jason Smith.

One way the city is committed to development is with the use of local, state and federal funding that helps navigate the new downtown.

“They can be a grant, they can be a tax credit, and they can be a loan,” said Smith.

Regardless of the type of assistance available, it all promotes growth.

“Let’s sit down, let’s tailor a program for them that access this pot of money. This pot of money,” said Smith.

One new project that came from a tax credit is a new apartment downtown.

But growth doesn’t stop here.

You will soon see a newly renovated theater as well as more downtown restaurants.

“I like to see the growth. That’s one of the selling points that’s actually making me move my wife down here,” said Chuck Dyes, a resident of Thomson.

Smith said: “If we could just get a few more established restaurants we would be good to go.”

Overall, the small details added make for a bigger picture down the road.

“It’s little touches. We hope they will certainly beautify the downtown area,” said Smith.
