Fox Creek seniors take a special walk down memory lane
BELVEDERE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Seniors at Fox Creek High School were once told they wouldn’t be able to participate in their elementary senior walk because they aren’t in the Aiken County School District anymore.
Students and South Carolina lawmakers fought for these students to have their moment.
The seniors doubted the walkthrough at Belvedere Elementary School was possible on Tuesday morning.
“At the very beginning, I thought we had a very, very slim chance of it happening,” said Colten Walker, who just graduated from Fox Creek. “Everybody rallied behind us. It made us feel like our voices were heard and then, you know, when everybody’s voices rally together, amazing things can happen.”
The community and the South Carolina State House were on their side to be able to walk.
The seniors are grateful the district and Fox Creek made the walk possible.
“It felt like a whole bunch of weight lifted off the shoulders because it just felt nice just to walk through and not sitting at home watching everybody else walk through,” said Madisyn Thatcher.
Raygen Farris said: “I mean it was really nice. It was fun to go and see everybody that we’ve been in school with and haven’t seen in a while and it was just it was just cool to reminisce on all the days.”
They were able to share moments of joy with family, friends and former teachers. Thatcher is looking to become a teacher because of a teacher she had at Belvedere Elementary.
“We kind of shed some tears because she helped me get to the point where I am today,” said Thatcher.
Different color caps and gowns came together as one, leaving a legacy of their own.
To them, it wasn’t about where you finished, but instead, it’s where you started and your roots.
“If there’s something that you believe in, stand up for it and don’t stop working until you put every ounce of being into it,” said Walker. “Never root against the underdogs.”
