Westside state champions honored with ring, net cutting ceremony
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -The Westside Patriots basketball team had one last celebration before they could call their season officially ‘wrapped.’
The Patriots hosted a ring and net cutting ceremony for the 2A state champions.
In early March, Westside beat Toombs County 64-29 in the Macon Coliseum for their third state championship in a row.
Saturday the high school rolled out the red carpet honoring the state champions and the cheerleading squad.
“It’s surreal, it’s the last time I’m probably going to be on the court here, so it’s definitely a good feeling,” said Bobby Blackwell.
“Winning is about being around the right guys and the right coaches, if you get that, you learn how to win, win win, and earn a ring,” said Demarco Middleton.
“In this fight, we were the underdogs. I mean, my first championship at Laney we were the underdogs as well, but these guys had a tough act to follow. Losing three guys and then coming back to the state championship, we did it as one. They accepted their roles. They understood that in order to get it done, we have to be the players on the best team,” said Jerry Hunter, head coach.
The basketball program also took a moment to honor football coach Timothy McClain who ed just a few weeks after the team won state. Coach Hunter presented his sons with awards for McClain’s of the basketball squad.
