WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Washington County deputy was seriously injured after an accident while responding to a request for backup from a fellow deputy, authorities said Tuesday.

Authorities say on June 3, a deputy was responding to assist with a pursuit when he lost control of his vehicle on Georgia 24 near Ridge Road, according to authorities.

The deputy lost control of his vehicle due to heavy rain, causing hazardous driving conditions, authorities say.

Despite his efforts, he veered off the roadway, striking a tree around 11:15 p.m., according to Sheriff Joel Cochran.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, where the deputy was found trapped inside the vehicle.

Washington County firefighters arrived promptly and successfully extricated the deputy from the wreckage, authorities say.

The injured deputy was transported to Wellstar Hospital in Augusta, where he is currently undergoing surgery Tuesday morning for injuries sustained in the accident, Cochran says.

Sheriff Joel Cochran stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with our deputy and his family during this difficult time. We are grateful for our firefighters and medical personnel’s swift response and professionalism. The safety and well-being of our deputies are of utmost importance, and we will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Georgia State Patrol Post 33 will be investigating the accident. There will be updates as the investigation continues.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office requests that the public keep the deputy in their thoughts and prayers for a speedy and full recovery.
