SALLEY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Father’s Day is coming up, and we’re shining a light on a new parent at Eudora Farms in Salley.

Last week, Larry the Ostrich and his mate debuted their three new babies. And this isn’t the first time.

We have the answers to why Larry decided to become a parent again.

Larry is one of the park’s first animals, but his unique personality is what sets him apart.

“We kind of noticed that every time we would go out in the park, somebody knew who he would be right there by just checking them out and wanting to see what they were doing. And he would do that. And he would do that almost until the time you left the park. So we kind of started thinking, you know, he’s just kind of sheriff of the county, and he’s just gonna make sure there’s no shenanigans or anything like that going on while you’re in here, " said Mark Nisbet, owner of Eudora Farms.

Larry has a protective personality, and that doesn’t just mean his home. He is very protective of his babies too.

“He’s very protective of them making sure they’re safe and they’re careful, and so they really look up to Larry,” said Nisbet.

According to Nisbet, Larry is an exemplary father.

“The male and the female, they raise them and stay with them for 24 hours a day, for seven days a week, for about five, six months. So they’re very, very good parents and Larry is really proven to be a great dad. And we’re real proud of him,” said Nisbet.

So, how does Larry plan to celebrate Father’s Day?

“He’s gonna be celebrating, just fanning his feathers out and sticking his chest out and just showing everybody his babies. So he’s a wonderful dad, and he has a wonderful partner who is helping him take care of them, and we encourage people to come and get a chance to see Larry and his proud little kids,” said Nisbet.

Nisbet says opening a safari park had been his and his family’s dream for nearly 20 years.

In 2020, they finally got the chance.

“I went out there with a riding lawnmower, made a trail and did a little thing on Facebook. We opened on Mother’s Day in 2020. It started out a little slow, but then people went home with social media and sent stuff out. So, it was kind of the perfect storm,” he said.

Now, you can see Larry and plenty of other wildlife Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sundays from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
