NEWNAN, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Officials say a house fire Monday morning in Coweta County claimed the lives of six people.

Coweta County officials say at 4:57 a.m., Coweta County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residential fire with people possibly trapped on the 1300 block of Macedonia Road in Newnan. When fire crews arrived, the home was engulfed in flames. Officials say the fire quickly spread through the home and into the attic.

“Eleven people being in the house and crews responding to that and having six victims, it’s just a tough morning,” said Chief Robby Flanagan, Coweta County Fire Rescue.

There were 11 people inside the multi-generational home when the fire broke out.

The Coweta County Coroner Richard Hawk confirmed six people died in the fire. The coroner’s office says the ages of those who died are 6,12,13, 36, and two 74-year-olds – all who are related.

Flanagan said five individuals, some with serious injuries, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Ryan McMillian, who lives nearby, jumped in to help.

“I heard a cry for help, then when I came around the corner from over here, I just noticed the backside of the house was blazed, the car was blazed. I just ran up and tried to help,” he said.

Jared Wrighter also made efforts to help those trapped inside.

“This is the worst thing I ever seen in my life. You kind of feel like wish you could have done more,” Wrighter said.

Coweta County Fire Rescue is working with the Coweta County Fire Marshal, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal to determine the cause of the fire.

“There’s no way we’re going to reason this out. So, you know, there’s going be a lot of unanswered questions,” said Pastor Buddy Waldron, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. “That’s probably one of the major issues that’s going through the minds of this family, those children. Older generations, we know that our time is near but children, you don’t expect that.”
